IPL Betting Racket Busted In Nagaon, Six People Arrested
Guwahati: At least six people were detained in Nagaon district in Central Assam for their alleged involvement in gambling in the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 cricket tournament.
Officials have added that the police have confiscated cash worth Rs 2 lakh along with mobile phones.
A team of police personnel belonging to Nagaon Police station raided a betting hideout in the Katimari Grant area after they got tipped off. A total of six gamblers were arrested in this raid.
The illegal activity took place from the residence of Abdul Rahman, who has been arrested.
As per reports, one of the accused who has been apprehended happens to be a staff member of Nagaon's special prison.
Officials stated that they received information in the afternoon about a betting racket that was operating at Katimari Grant in Abdul Rahman's house and the squad spotted six people when they arrived.
The officials further went on to say that they recovered a television, betting sheets and mobile phones in addition to almost Rs 2 lakh in cash from their possession.
It is worth noting that unlike in some countries like the UK, sports betting is illegal under Indian law.
Meanwhile, the cash-rich IPL has had a nefarious record of illegal gambling in the past. Several prominent figures were accused of being involved in betting.
It includes the likes of Arbaaz Khan, and Raj Kundra, among others. However, it was not confined to Bollywood celebrities and some cricketers such as the likes S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were charged with allegations of spot-fixing.
In July 2015, CSK and RR were suspended from the IPL for two years for betting and spot-fixing activities of their key officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra during the 2013 season.
Both of them were banned for life from being involved in any cricket matches conducted by the BCCI.
